Opeth - Deliverance
Written by Adrian Cole

Opeth. There is just something about this band that amazes me. There's honestly no other band quite like them. They've been around for a long time and since the beginning they've always had their own sound. It seems as they progress they set themselves apart from the faceless masses of bands even more. There's nothing stale about this band or their c.d.'s. The only bad thing I could honestly say about this band is that

although each track usually clocks in around 10 + minutes it doesn't leave enough room for more than 5-7 songs. And that's just not enough for me. Even though the c.d.'s usually clock in at a little over an hour they can somehow make each song feel like your average 5 minute songs. Just by how smooth the transitions are and by the amazing songwriting and melodies they bring forth. Every c.d. I hear from them simply puts me in a trance and I can't stand not listening the whole way through. But enough rambling.. Onto the c.d.

It begins with a powerful drum fill from their madman/ drummer Martin Lopez and goes straight into a driving riff in the form of Wreath. This song is simply amazing. The solos the riffs the drumming everything is in top form, And like usual Mr. Akerfeldts vocals are brutal as hell. The first melodic interlude after the first verse is quite possibly one of my favorite melodies on this c.d. Up next is the fan favorite Deliverance. Well, this song is fucking awesome. What can I say. From the intense beginning to the clean interludes in between than the off time breakdown-ish thing at the end. This song is absolutely perfect. Its dark ist brutal its opeth. The next song is what I would consider the standout track on this c.d. It sounds like it could have been a reject from the Damnation c.d. seeing as its one of their softer songs. Stephen Wilson (the producer) provided the keys for this masterpiece and probably some backup vocals. It starts off with somewhat jazzy piano chords than goes into the song. The clean vocals are amazing. This is definitely one of my favorite songs from opeth. The melodic interludes between the verses are amazing and the clean part around 3:50 is absolutely beautiful. The song is indescribable, you have to hear it to fully understand it. Its truly an amazing song. After this is a quick instrumental track and once you finally feel calm the first chord to one of the heaviest songs on the c.d. strikes. I love this song. It starts with a simply chuggy riff with some double bass going on behind it. And than it gets a little crazy, this continues into one of the greatest sections Ive heard in a song. Its a typical simple acoustic opeth part but something about this one is just awesome. The music the vocals everything is great. Complemented with the help of producer Stephen Wilson this is an amazing part and a crucial part to this song. Because right when you feel everythings cool in comes the distorted guitar and muted cymbals accompanied by Mikaels brutal death metal vocals. How can this man have such intense death metal vocals yet still retain such an amazing singing voice? Awesome. Up next is one of the strangest tracks from this band. Also one of my favorites it has the typical driving opeth riffs the clean interludes and even some weird circus type of riff/interlude thing that is definitely creepy as hell. This is probably my other favorite song on the c.d.

I honestly think everybody should listen to this c.d. And be sure to bring an open mind with you. When I first heard this band I was not that into them.. But they are definitely an acquired taste. And once that taste is acquired it is definitely worthwhile. They instantly became one of my favorite bands. Every time I buy one of their c.d.s there isnt a track that I dont like.

Standout Tracks: A Fair Judgment, By The Pain I See In Others, but in all honesty the entire c.d. is top quality. I only selected these two simply because theyre the most different. But every song on this c.d. is a masterpiece.

Track Listing:

1. Wreath
2. Deliverance
3. A fair judgement
4. For absent friends
5. Master's apprentices
6. By the pain I see in others
