Permanent are the best melodic harcore band out right now, period. Virginia hardcore outfit Permanent bust out with five songs on their previous 7'' titled Sleeping, (available through RevHq) that was released last March on a smaller label called Rise and Fall Records. I first bought the 7'' and was instantly reminded of the now defunct band Stay Gold but yet in a sense could see where they took older bands like Dag Nasty and Turning Point to comprimise their sound. The sound is fast, melodic hardcore that will leave you wanting more.
Their sophomore record Sink/Swim brings me instant joy because it reminds me of one of my favorite hc bands ever, Count Me Out. Over the years most hc kids believe that the melodic sound has been played the fuck out, bloated you can say, but "Permanent" stands apart from most melodic bands due to their hard/dark edge that molds their distinct sound. Songs like "The Van Song," "Can't Settle," "And Kings," along with their sweet instrumental Sink/Swim, this record will not leave your rotation for awhile. The lyrics tend to speak out to the reality of getting older but then it seems like the singer makes attempts to stay young until he dies by hanging onto his youth.
Their best song on the lp in my opinion would be "Efforts Toward Disaster." It starts out with a killer intro reminescent of one of the best bands ever, Turning Point. Only downer I have about Sink/Swim is the Lp rounds out to a short lived 21 minute affair that leves me with wanting more. 10 highly entergetic tracks full of melodic hardcore.
I missed their West Coast show out here but I assure you that you will not want to sleep on this up and coming band from Richmond, Va. Go pick up their Lp Sink/Swim or their 7'' entitled Sleeping from RevHq or 6131 Records.
For fans of: Turning Point, Battery, Count Me Out and Stay Gold.
Rating 8.5/10
Buy from 6131 Records.
